About this organisation

Tithe Office (oak panelled 17th century room) available for private hire. Room suitable for up to 22 guests seated, projector screen, refreshments and lunch facilities available.

Oliver Cromwell was born on April 25th 1599. Since his death as Lord Protector in 1658 his fascinating life, ambitions, motives and actions have been the subject of much investigation and debate. He was a forceful character and his importance as a key figure in a very troubled period of British history is indisputable.

Cromwell came to Ely in 1636 and lived here with his family for some ten years. We welcome you to visit his former House, the only surviving residence other than Hampton Court, London and experience a time when Parliament rebelled against the King, politics and religion divided families, when armies were raised and ordinary life in the villages and shires changed for ever.

See what domestic life would have been like in the 17th Century in a variety of re-created period rooms as well as an exhibition detailing the Civil War. Visit Mrs Cromwell's kitchen, try dressing-up or playing with the toys of the time or venture into the Haunted Bedroom if you dare!

Audio handsets bring the story of this impressive House to life. Guided tours and group visits welcome.
